Bristol’s Begbrook House Care Home, closed since 2022, will be demolished after planners approved redevelopment plans for a larger facility
Demolition of Begbrook House Care Home Approved
Begbrook House Care Home, located in Frenchay near Bristol, is set to be demolished. The care home closed over three years ago, but planners have only recently approved its demolition.
The facility, owned by Barchester Healthcare, shut down in 2022. Urban explorers have been filming inside and sharing “dystopian” scenes on Facebook.
New Plans for the Site
The updated building will accommodate 60 residents, an increase from the original 32. It will also include an additional level. Planners at Bristol City Council stated that the new building will fit the character of the area.
They noted, “The proposed care home broadly follows the footprint of the existing building but introduces an additional storey, resulting in an increase in scale and massing.”
Condition of the Care Home
Since its closure, the care home has been boarded up. However, B&R Urban Explorers managed to gain access. They shared images on Facebook, describing the home as “unnervingly lifeless” with no furniture or equipment.
During their visit, they reported a “creepy” experience when a man suddenly ran out of the building. Covid tests were found piled high inside the home.
Another group, 2k Abandoned Places, also accessed the site. They described the condition as “truly shocking,” noting files left in the office and sheets still in the tumble dryers.
Statement from Barchester Healthcare
A spokeswoman for Barchester Healthcare said, “Begbrook House care home has long had an important role to play in the local community. We are delighted that planning permission for our beautiful new home has now been granted so that we can bring our high standards of care to the local area.”
She added, “We are grateful to the council for the work on this and excited to explore the next steps in planning, design and development.”
