Police Release CCTV Images of Escaped Prisoners

Police have released CCTV images of a convicted murderer and another prisoner who escaped from prison on New Year’s Day.

Avon and Somerset Police reported sightings of Matthew Armstrong and Daniel Washbourne, who absconded from HMP Leyhill in South Gloucestershire.

Name Age Conviction Last Seen Location
Matthew Armstrong 35 Murder during robbery in Warwickshire (2009) Ashley Road, Bristol
Daniel Washbourne 40 Violence and false imprisonment Not specified

Armstrong was convicted of murder during a robbery in Warwickshire in 2009. Washbourne has previous convictions for violence and false imprisonment.

Police said two men matching their descriptions were seen in Ashley Road, Bristol, at 10:35 AM on Saturday. They were walking towards the Stokes Croft area.

On Sunday, between 9:35 AM and 9:45 AM, a man was seen walking along Filton Road and Gloucester Road North in Filton. He stopped to look at bus timetables.

This man wore a burgundy coat similar to the one Armstrong had when he left HMP Leyhill. Police believe he continued walking along the same road and was seen in the Patchway area between 11:05 AM and 11:15 AM.

Police stated that neither Armstrong nor Washbourne are known to have connections to Avon and Somerset. They believe there is a “distinct possibility” that the men traveled outside the area.

Armstrong is described as a white male, about 5 feet 9 inches tall, with ginger hair, and has links to Warwickshire. Washbourne is described as a white male, about 5 feet 6 inches tall, slim, with brown hair, clean-shaven, and has links to Herefordshire.

Aaron Thomas, 39, was charged with escaping from prison after being arrested in Bristol on Saturday. He appeared before magistrates on Monday, according to Avon and Somerset Police.

Thomas is scheduled to attend Bristol Crown Court next month, the police added.
