Chislehurst in Bromley was named sixth in The Telegraph’s 2026 Best Places to Live in London list, praised for its green spaces, historic sites, and strong transport links
Chislehurst Named One of London’s Best Places to Live
Chislehurst, located in Bromley between Beckenham and Bickley, is one of Bromley’s prettiest neighborhoods. The Telegraph recently included Chislehurst in its annual Best Places to Live in London list for 2026.
The area ranked sixth, following West Greenwich in fourth and East Dulwich in fifth. Chislehurst is served by National Rail services from Chislehurst station.
Factors for Selection
The Telegraph collaborated with Hamptons estate agents to name the top ten areas to live. They considered factors like green spaces, travel links, and access to good schools and facilities.
Housing and Prices
Chislehurst features striking homes, ranging from Victorian to Edwardian styles. According to Rightmove, house prices in Chislehurst average around £767,203.
The area has links to London Charing Cross and London Cannon Street, as well as local bus services to Abbey Wood via the SL3 and Bexleyheath via the 269.
Historical Significance
Chislehurst is known for its rich history, some of which dates back hundreds of years. One notable site is Chislehurst Caves, a network of underground tunnels stretching 22 miles and dating back over 4,000 years.
During the Blitz, over 15,000 people used the caves as an air raid shelter each night. Some set up businesses there, including dentists, barbers, a cinema, and a church.
Today, visitors can tour the caves and learn about their long history, which dates back to the time of the Druids.
Scadbury Manor
Another historic landmark in Chislehurst is Scadbury Manor, which dates back to the 13th century. It was built by the wealthy de Scathebury family and is located within Scadbury Woods.
Over the centuries, the manor changed hands among five families, including the influential Walsingham family, who shaped much of its Tudor heritage. Although much of the manor is gone, the ruins remain open for exploration on selected days each year.
Pubs and Eateries
Chislehurst is home to many historic pubs, including the award-winning Cockpit Pub, named Bromley’s “Best Pub” in 2023, and The Imperial Arms, which was formerly a jail.
The Imperial Arms dates back to 1787 and was a popular spot when Louis Napoleon III was exiled to Chislehurst in the 19th century.
The area also features independent shops and eateries on the high street, offering a diverse mix of places to eat and drink.
Shopping and Dining
Chislehurst has shops selling gifts, trinkets, handmade beauty products, and candles, including Annabel’s and Boutiques and Bubbles. The dining scene includes award-winning Asian restaurants like Ginger & Spices and Panas Ghurka, as well as bars like Bank House, located in the former NatWest Bank.
Education
Chislehurst has 12 Outstanding rated schools within a 3-mile radius. Notable schools include Midfield Primary School, Crofton Junior School, and Burnt Oak Junior School.
