Drink Driver Sentenced for Fatal Crash

A drink driver, Stephen Naylor, 41, has been exposed for lying about his injuries after killing motorcyclist Owen Baugh on the M62 near Liverpool in April 2021.

Naylor was driving his Audi at speeds up to 120 mph when he crashed into Baugh’s motorbike, causing Baugh to be thrown into the road. The 23-year-old victim from Manchester was then fatally struck by another vehicle.

Naylor sustained serious injuries when his car veered off the road and hit a wooden fence. Despite spending weeks in the hospital, the injuries did not have the lasting effects he and his wife claimed.

Evidence of Deceit

The couple exaggerated Naylor’s injuries to avoid justice. Police found videos and pictures of him dancing, playing rugby, kayaking, and holidaying abroad. He even attended his brother’s wedding and gave a speech, showing he was not too injured to evade justice.

During his arrest, police bodycam footage showed Naylor and his wife, Lisa, attempting to deceive officers. Lisa claimed Naylor had a brain injury and was overwhelmed. Naylor pretended to be confused when police entered his home.

Legal Proceedings

After being discharged from the hospital in June 2021, Naylor failed to provide a blood specimen to police. He was cleared of this offense in July 2023 when a psychiatrist noted he appeared ‘distressed’ during a consultation.

Lisa claimed Naylor’s memory had worsened and he had issues with walking. However, officers found evidence of him playing rugby in April 2023 and shopping at supermarkets in June and July 2023.

In October 2024, the couple was formally interviewed about the evidence. Naylor was sentenced to 12 years in prison for causing death by dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice. Lisa received a four-and-a-half-year sentence for perverting the course of justice.

Family Statement

The family of Owen Baugh issued a statement saying, “Since Mr Naylor’s actions on the night of 25 April 2021, our lives have come to a total, devastating stop. The ripple effect has travelled as far as America, Pakistan, and Dubai where some of his best friends now live. His girlfriend still struggles to live a normal life.”

They thanked the emergency services and Merseyside Police for their efforts in bringing Naylor to justice.
