Man Jailed for 35 Years After Baby’s Injury

A man left a baby permanently brain damaged after he “snapped” and threw the child at a TV screen.

Rhydian Jamieson, 28, was playing a video game when he attacked the baby.

He then hid the severely injured baby under a duvet and fled the scene without calling for help.

Jamieson has been sentenced to 35 years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted murder.

The baby’s grandmother called him a “monster” after he did not face her during sentencing.

Details of the Incident

Swansea Crown Court heard that the incident occurred in January last year. Jamieson messaged his online gaming friends, stating he had thrown the baby at the TV.

He claimed he had “lost it” and was urged to call an ambulance, but he said the baby was already dead.

Prosecutor Caroline Rees KC stated that Jamieson took steps to “conceal” the crime by placing the child under a duvet.

He then “ran away” from the scene without contacting emergency services.

Injuries and Long-term Effects

When the baby was eventually taken to the hospital, doctors found bleeding on the brain, a fractured skull, and bruising on the face and limbs.

The court heard that the baby suffered “profound, life-altering” brain damage and will need lifelong care and support.

The child also has visual impairment, is likely to have lifelong epileptic seizures, and has “global developmental delay” with “features of cerebral palsy.”

Judge’s Remarks

Judge Paul Thomas KT stated that Jamieson attacked the baby in a “fit of uncontrollable temper.”

He criticized Jamieson for hiding the child under a duvet and fleeing in an “act of horrendous callousness and self-interest.”

The judge added, “You have not had the courage to come to court today to have sentence passed against you.”

He noted that Jamieson claimed he was wrongfully convicted and stated, “I find you do not show a scintilla of true remorse for what you did to that baby.”

He concluded, “Your only thoughts are all about you and not about anybody else.”
