Investigation into Peterborough stabbing response amid links to Huntingdon train attack
Investigation of Police Officers Over Stabbing Incident
Two police officers are under investigation for potential gross misconduct. This is due to alleged failures in properly investigating an attack linked to the Huntingdon train stabbings.
Ricky Butcher was outside Fletton Club in Peterborough on 27 September. He was waiting for a taxi with a group when a man stabbed him.
Mr. Butcher said he needed stitches for a cut on his mouth. He mentioned that his face is “numb, and probably always will be, due to the cut.”
He expressed anger that Cambridgeshire Police stopped their investigation just two days later. “They could have taken it more seriously – I had five witnesses with me,” he stated.
In November, Cambridgeshire Police announced an internal review of events, including Mr. Butcher’s case. This review came before a mass stabbing on an LNER train from Doncaster to King’s Cross on 1 November.
Anthony Williams, 32, faces 10 counts of attempted murder related to the Huntingdon incident.
An IOPC spokesperson said on Thursday that their independent investigation is ongoing. This investigation is about a police complaint from Mr. Butcher regarding the assault incident in Fletton on 27 September 2025.
The spokesperson added, “The complaint relates to Cambridgeshire Constabulary’s investigation into the incident at the time.”
In January, two Cambridgeshire police constables were notified of the investigation for potential gross misconduct. This relates to alleged failures in investigating the incident properly.
The spokesperson clarified, “This does not mean that disciplinary proceedings will necessarily follow. At the end of our investigation, we’ll decide whether any officers should face disciplinary proceedings.”
The investigation began after a referral from the force in November 2025.
