Surrey Police Refers Itself to Watchdog After Unexplained Death
Surrey Police has referred itself to the watchdog following the unexplained death of a man. His body was found outside a home in Guildford.
The police stated they are in contact with the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) because officers had contact with the man before his death.
Details about the interaction between the police and the man, including when it occurred, have not been provided.
Officers were called to Hazel Avenue just after 7:15 AM on Friday. A member of the public discovered the body.
While formal identification has not yet taken place, police believe the man was in his 30s. His next of kin has been informed.
In a statement, the police said, “Following our investigation today, the death is being treated as unexplained, but we do not believe there to be any suspicious circumstances.”
They added, “We are preparing a case to pass to the coroner.”
Hazel Avenue, located in the Bellfields area north of Guildford town center, was closed while officers conducted their investigation.
Surrey Police also made a mandatory referral to the IOPC due to police contact with the deceased prior to the incident. They stated there is no wider risk to the public regarding the man’s death.
