In Withernsea, two people have been confirmed dead as search efforts continue for one missing individual amid challenging conditions.
The RNLI has thanked volunteers for their efforts during the tragedy in Withernsea. They faced “challenging snow conditions” while searching for missing individuals.
According to the RNLI, crews recovered two casualties, while lifeboats from Withernsea, Bridlington, and Skegness searched for one remaining missing person. The sea conditions were very difficult, with three-meter waves, strong winds, and cold air temperatures. After extensive searches, the operation was paused around 12:30 AM.
Search efforts resumed at first light on Saturday, January 3. RNLI volunteers from Withernsea searched the shoreline on foot, working alongside partner agencies in challenging snow conditions. HM Coastguard ended the search at 4 PM.
Rescue teams reported that conditions were “extremely difficult.” Agencies involved included HM Coastguard, Coastguard Rescue Teams from Withernsea, Hornsea, and Hull, Hornsea Inshore Rescue, Yorkshire Ambulance Service, Humberside Police, and Humberside Fire and Rescue.
The RNLI expressed gratitude to the public who assisted emergency services and recognized the professionalism and commitment of all agencies involved. They also acknowledged the dedication of volunteers who spent many hours at sea in tough conditions.
